There’s a saying I have to remind myself of often, “I want to be fit for life.” Sometimes I need to hear it because I feel my body reaching exhaustion from pushing too hard, while other times it’s because I’ve skipped my workouts for a few days longer than planned.
Thinking about that guiding phrase snaps me out of my funk. Sure, there always seems to be a race to train for and an event I want to look amazing at, but ultimately, balance and sustainability are also part of my fitness goals.
That’s why this roundup of incredibly fit seniors from PopSugar is so inspiring and empowering. These women — including 96-year-old yoga master Tao Porchon-Lynch who is the world’s oldest yoga teacher, and Johanna Quaasan, an 89-year old gymnast — defy standards of aging and prove that fitness is a lifestyle, not an event. And perhaps it’s even a key to longevity.
Willie Murphy, featured in the video below, is a 77-year-old, badass powerlifter. “I wanted to become better, to have a little edge in life,” she says in the clip. Now that is motivation.
